Becoming a plotter?!?!

The age old debate amongst writers. That eternal battle between Plotters and Pantsers. I’ve always considered myself a Pantser. Most of the time I have a character and a vague idea and away we go. Probably why I have a thumb drive full of unfinished half baked ideas.

This week has started out different. As I finally draw into the closing chapters of this round of the dots for Book 3 of my Family Heritage series, I had a villain and an idea for book 4.

Monday morning it hit me and by noon I had plotted out a high level outline for the entire book, while working my day job.

What’s more is book 5, which was little more than the idea of having shifters in it, has become an actually plotted book as well. Down to villains and their goals and scene outline.

I’ve never written like this before and it’s a little strange feeling. I’ve now dusted off an old idea I’d filed away and am working it through as well.

Last night I asked my wife about something she’d talked about. One of those, “Honey you should write this moments,” she’d had months ago. She hadn’t figured out the last couple of characters (based on our nieces and nephews), and I told her about my outlining this week. I mentioned I’d like to take a stab at coming up with a story using these characters but I needed the details.

This is where I surprised her by admitting I don’t normally plot my writing. I take the vague idea or character and just turn them loose. Then I write up the incident report. She couldn’t believe that because of how I am in my personal life. I’m a planner. I’m a step 1 is followed by step 2 and so on.

She’s convinced that I’m definitely in possession of multiple personalities and she wants the Pantser to be more involved in my day to day life. What’s more is she’s trying to name the personalities. I just chuckled at her.

Spell a Day – Feb 28th 2016

Time to take stock of where we are so far this year my Gentle Readers. We are 2 months in, one-sixth of the year is over. How is everyone doing on their goals for the year?

Here was my list I made:
1 – I want to finish the rewrite/editing of my first book so that the improved second edition can be released. – The second edition is at my editor friend getting looked over, hoping for a spring release.
2 – I want to self pub my novella (still in the editing phase). – I have the edits back, just haven’t worked through them all yet.
3 – I want to finish, edit, and self pub my the second book in my Family Heritage series this year. – Waiting on feedback to the extended ending of book 1 so I can flow it right into book 2.
4 – I would like to make some major progress on my high fantasy (think Tolkien) series. I have the skeleton of a realm, deities, antagonists/protagonists. Just have to finish plotting and then get to work fleshing out the stories. I haven’t quite figured out if it will be a series of short stories/novellas, or if each set of characters will end up in their own full blown novel. Since they will also overlap I have to make sure my outlines are complete for consistency. – Tabled this one for now.
5 – I plan to get myself down in weight before summer. I have at least the 20-30 to lose that I want to, so from there I will evaluate what I still can lose healthily. – Still holding steady where I was at the beginning of the year. At least I haven’t gained back any of the 30lbs I lost last year.
6 – I want to blog at least once a week, if not more often. I will be looking for topics to discuss. As part of this I want to do at least 2 book reviews a month. I need to get a submission page setup for anyone interested in having me review their work. – So far this is going well. I am averaging at least 1 book a week and my Spell a Day posts seem to have gathered some avid readers. I hope everyone is enjoying them.
7 – It would be nice to put together a book of poetry as well. I have a notebook almost full and a thumb drive with a few dozen from when I was younger. Just not sure if I have enough that would be of interest to others. The ones I have blogged here have received favorable reviews so perhaps there is potential in others as well. – This is buried under the other writing projects.
8 – I want to bring down and gain a better handle on my temper. I am not a homicidal maniac, but there are times where a cooler head would be a better face to present. I have noticed my son picking up some of my habits and I hope that if I can break my cycle, I can help him to not struggle like I have. – Things seem to be going well in this category. No blow-ups.

A few other updates, my home office is done and so is the nursery. We are all ready for the new baby to arrive in April. I am excited and scared all at the same time. That’s all for now my Gentle Readers. Take stock of where you are and keep striving for those goals.

Spell a Day – Jan 21st 2016

So Gentle Readers, we are three weeks into the new year and it is time to take stock of our progress. How are things going on your front? For me, I am still holding steady at about 335lbs, so not much movement there. I blame the winter weather, it’s hard to go outside and be active this time of year. At least for me. I have managed to go through two more books and post their reviews. You can check them out in my archives. I picked up several free ebooks from a mailing list I joined so I think I am set for the next week. I haven’t managed to finish the revised and extended ending of my first novel yet. Hopefully by next week.

How are you doing on your new year’s resolution? Spend some time today reflecting on your progress, or lack thereof, and decide where you want to be in six months.

Spell a Day – Jan 8th 2016

My Spell A Day Almanac says that January 8th is a day to get fired up for success.

WHOOPS, I don’t think that’s what was meant. The New Year is getting well underway and I hope everyone is still keeping up with their resolutions. I know I am. I am still floundering my way through the revisions on my first novel. (Damn you Sudoku for being so additive.) I have managed to do a couple book reviews so I am getting somewhere with that. And if everyone looks at the date on this post, I am only 10 days behind on this Spell a Day feature. I am making such incredible headway. Oh, yeah, I am also still the same weight I started the month off at. I blame sweets and the cold weather for this. It is very hard to go outside and do anything fun when it is negative windchills. Just not something I want to do.

Chinese philosopher Laozi is quoted as saying, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Contrary to some belief, it was not his contemporary Confucius who said this. Have you taken your first step on your resolutions my gentle readers? I want to encourage you all to take hold of what it is you want this year and make it happen.

I have a poem to share with you about chasing your dreams.

Journey’s Beginning
Journeys great or small
Begin with a single step
Take your first today

Success means different things
To paupers as it does to Kings

Dream the crazy dream
Wild with imagination
Because it’s all yours

Don’t lose sight of your goals
Don’t fear obstacles in your way
Even when your fires is merely coals
A little fuel can burn as bright as day

Find our true passions
And chase them to fruition
Then hold them tightly

Hold onto your goals and dreams for this year gentle readers. Until next time.

Spell a day – Jan 7th 2016

As the first week of the new year draws to a close. I ask you gentle readers, Have you kept to your resolutions? Sadly I don’t think I have to kept to mine as well as I wanted to. I have posted more blog posts than I have in recent months, and I have lost a couple pounds on my health target. I am no closer to my revisions/edits to my book 1 however.

Today is a day to rededicate yourself to your goals for the year, just as one would rededicate their altar of worship. Your temple is your life and your dreams for the new year. Hold fast to what you desire and take incremental steps to make it happen. Often the failure of New Year Resolutions is due to a lack of discipline and willpower. Do not let this be your failing this year my friends. Go out and make it happen for yourself.

I leave you with some words of wisdom from Frank Lloyd Wright. Sadly the maker of this meme didn’t do a good job of spelling his name. Maybe they should have applied a little more of this dedication, hard work and unremitting devotion he speaks of.

2016 is here…

Hello Gentle Readers. I thought in the midst of everyone’s New Year Resolution posts I would just add my own commentary.

2015 was a rollercoaster mixed with a hurricane. It came and left in a hurry. My literary and blogging goals stalled out for much of the year. I did manage to put a novella into the hands of a new friend for editing. She also took a look at my first novel and found some much needed grammatical and word usage problems that have made my work better. I failed to participate in NaNoWriMo, but that’s alright. The pressure would probably make me give up anyway.

On the fatherhood front I assisted my son’s baseball team and coached football. Coaching sports when I am clearly not a sports person was an experience in learning. The kids all seemed to have fun and we made it through the season without too many problems. My family will also be welcoming a new addition sometime in late April (if all goes according to plan). The prep work on the nursery has been tiring, but in a good way. My wife and I have decided to not find out the gender until the birth. This appears to be a growing trend according to our doctor. This new chapter in my journey as a parent is overwhelming at times. As of December 31st, we had “crossed the finish line” as our doctor says. Now if there is any premature labor, the baby is viable to survive. That means my family is definitely going to have an 11year old, and a newborn. The greatest part of these doctor visits has been hearing the heartbeat of a little person I helped create. We are also far enough along that I can feel the baby move and kick.

I have become obsessed with the Mackelmore and Lewis song, Growing Up (Sloane’s Song). I usually start my drive to work with it on and it is the last song I play before I pull into the drive at night. It has been my motivation to become a better person for the sake of both of my children. This means working on my temper and getting myself in better shape. I know, everyone makes resolutions to be healthier in the new year. However, I have managed to lose just over 30 pounds in the last 6 months. My goal is another 20-30 the first 6 months of this year. This will put me lighter than I have been since junior high. I have been quite pleased with my self control because I was warned that husbands typically put on some “sympathy weight” when their wives are pregnant. I have managed to stay constant the last two months.

I am also ecstatic over the new home office I am setting up in a spare bedroom in my home. I just have a carpet remnant to put down, and a corner shelving unit to buy or build (pending approval from my wife on design) and then I can really get to work on my literary endeavors. The space will be conducive to working on any project requiring some privacy and space to spread out notes/reference materials. There is even a section where my son (and future children) can work on homework or arts/crafts, without interfering with my work.

I suppose it is time for a few goals and resolutions for the year.
1 – I want to finish the rewrite/editing of my first book so that the improved second edition can be released.
2 – I want to self pub my novella (still in the editing phase).
3 – I want to finish, edit, and self pub my the second book in my Family Heritage series this year.

6 – I want to blog at least once a week, if not more often. I will be looking for topics to discuss. As part of this I want to do at least 2 book reviews a month. I need to get a submission page setup for anyone interested in having me review their work.

I have noticed my son picking up some of my habits and I hope that if I can break my cycle, I can help him to not struggle like I have.

I wish everyone else luck with their goals for 2016. This year has an extra day in it (Leap year and all). I think I am going to need it. HA HA! Until next time Gentle Readers.
